02 Why generated

Why use generated IAR practice tests?

Released questions are the official gold standard, and every task here is anchored to them. But states release only a handful, and students eventually know them. Generated practice tests keep the exact format and scoring while giving students fresh practice questions all year.

Released IAR items

  • Official items, the anchor for everything on this page
  • Limited number released each year
  • Students may have seen them in class already
  • Same prompts for every classroom

Generated practice tests

  • Unlimited fresh prompts in the released format
  • New practice questions on every click
  • Same task structure, directions, and official rubric
  • Built for ongoing exam prep, not one mock test
03 Scoring

Scored with the official IAR writing rubrics from ISBE.

Reading Comprehension and Written Expression plus Knowledge of Language and Conventions for research and literary analysis; Written Expression plus Conventions for narrative. Every descriptor, word for word, in the rubrics library.

04 FAQ

IAR writing, answered.

What writing is on the IAR ELA test?
IAR ELA includes prose constructed response (PCR) tasks: the Research Simulation Task, the Literary Analysis Task, and the Narrative Writing Task. Students read one or more texts and write an extended response grounded in evidence.
How is IAR writing scored?
Research and literary analysis responses are scored on Reading Comprehension and Written Expression (0 to 3 at grade 3, 0 to 4 at grades 4 to 8) plus Knowledge of Language and Conventions (0 to 3). Narrative tasks are scored on Written Expression plus Conventions. This generator embeds every descriptor word for word from the official ISBE rubrics.
Where can I find IAR released items?
ISBE links released items and scored anchor papers from its ELA Samples to Success guides at isbe.net. Released items are excellent but limited, which is why fresh practice in the same format helps.
How is grade 3 IAR writing scored differently?
At grade 3, Reading Comprehension and Written Expression is scored 0 to 3; at grades 4 to 8 it is scored 0 to 4. Knowledge of Language and Conventions is 0 to 3 at every grade. The official ISBE rubric also titles the grade 3 narrative rubric "Narrative Writing Task (NWT)" while grades 4 to 8 say "Narrative Task (NT)".
What kinds of prompts appear on IAR released items?
Released Research Simulation Tasks research concrete topics like training service dogs, giant pandas, and tornadoes; Literary Analysis Tasks compare theme and craft across two texts; Narrative Writing Tasks extend or retell a provided story, sometimes from another point of view.
How does this generator stay faithful to the real test?
Task introductions and prompts mirror ISBE-endorsed released items word for word in structure, the rubric is the official ISBE language, and exemplars are calibrated against officially scored IAR anchor papers.
Can AI grade IAR writing?
Yes. EnlightenAI trains on the official ISBE rubric and scores each PCR response with per-criterion feedback. In accuracy studies, EnlightenAI plus a teacher agreed with expert scores more closely than two teachers agreed with each other. See the AI essay grader and the accuracy research.
Is this IAR practice test generator free?
Yes. Generating practice tasks is free and requires no sign-in. Grading responses against the rubric in EnlightenAI takes a free account.
05 After the practice

Why teachers use AI grading after IAR practice tests.

Generating the practice is the easy half. Grading thirty essays against the official rubric is where the weekend goes. EnlightenAI scores responses against the same rubric with per-criterion feedback, so practice becomes a feedback loop instead of a grading backlog.

0.77 QWK with teachers

In a study with DREAM Charter Schools, EnlightenAI plus a teacher scored 0.77 quadratic weighted kappa agreement, versus 0.52 for two teachers scoring independently.

70% exact score match

On the New York Regents dataset, EnlightenAI matched the training teacher’s exact score 70% of the time, and landed within one point the rest of the time.

From a real classroom

“Grading, once my most dreaded task, became faster and far more efficient. With EnlightenAI handling the bulk of the grading, I was free to focus on what mattered most: meaningful instruction with my students.” Melynda Brown, 6th Grade Humanities, Delta Schools
