STAAR practice, anchored to the real test.

How the STAAR writing task actually works, what was on the 2025 and 2026 tests grade by grade, the official scoring rubrics, and a free generator that builds fresh ECR practice using the exact language from released TEA items. When students finish, EnlightenAI grades every response against the same official rubric in minutes.

01 The writing task

One essay, embedded in the RLA test.

Every STAAR RLA administration includes one extended constructed response: students read one or two passages and write a full essay. Two scorers each apply the official TEA rubric, Organization and Development of Ideas (0–3) plus Conventions (0–2), and their scores sum to a 10-point total. The genre rotates by year, so students should practice both informational and argumentative writing.

02 Why generated

Why use generated STAAR practice tests?

Released questions are the official gold standard, and every task here is anchored to them. But states release only a handful, and students eventually know them. Generated practice tests keep the exact format and scoring while giving students fresh practice questions all year.

Released STAAR tests

  • Official items, the anchor for everything on this page
  • Limited number released each year
  • Students may have seen them in class already
  • Same prompts for every classroom

Generated practice tests

  • Unlimited fresh prompts in the released format
  • New practice questions on every click
  • Same task structure, directions, and official rubric
  • Built for ongoing exam prep, not one mock test
03 Scoring

Scored with the official STAAR writing rubrics from TEA.

The full ECR rubrics, every descriptor word for word from the Texas Education Agency, live in the EnlightenAI rubrics library. Every practice task generated here links to the exact rubric that scores it.

04 FAQ

STAAR writing, answered.

What writing is on the STAAR test?
Each STAAR RLA administration includes one extended constructed response (ECR): a full essay written from one or two provided passages. The genre rotates by year between informational and argumentative (opinion at the younger grades). Grades 3 through 8 and the English I and II EOC exams all include an ECR.
How is the STAAR essay scored?
Two trained scorers each score the ECR on the official TEA rubric: Organization and Development of Ideas (0 to 3 points) and Conventions (0 to 2 points). The two scores are summed, so students can earn up to 10 points. The full rubrics, extracted word for word, are in the EnlightenAI rubrics library.
When is the STAAR test in 2026?
The spring 2026 RLA and English I and II window is April 6 to 17, 2026, with December and June EOC retest windows set annually by TEA. Districts schedule within the state window.
Where can I find released STAAR tests?
TEA publishes released tests and constructed-response scoring guides with real scored student essays at tea.texas.gov, and interactive released questions at practice.texasassessment.gov. Released items are excellent but limited in number, which is why fresh practice in the same format helps.
What does ECR stand for on STAAR?
Extended constructed response: the full essay item on the STAAR RLA test. Since the 2023 redesign, every RLA administration in grades 3 through 8 and the English I and II EOC includes one ECR, alongside short constructed responses and multiple choice.
Does the STAAR essay require a counterargument?
At grade 8, yes: the 2026 released argumentative item explicitly requires students to include a counterargument, both in the task statement and in the Remember to bullets. Grades 3 through 7 released items do not require one.
What terminology does STAAR use for the main idea by grade?
The released directions ladder the terminology: grades 3 to 5 informational items ask students to clearly state a central idea, argumentative items at all grades ask for a claim, grade 6 informational asks for a controlling idea, and grades 7 to 8 informational ask for a thesis. This generator uses each grade and genre’s exact released wording.
How can students practice STAAR writing?
Use the free STAAR writing practice generator on this site. It builds fresh ECR tasks that use the exact directions language from the 2024 to 2026 released tests, with leveled passages, the official rubric, and an exemplar response.
Can AI grade STAAR practice essays?
Yes. EnlightenAI trains on the official TEA rubric and scores each essay with per-criterion feedback. In accuracy studies, EnlightenAI plus a teacher agreed with expert scores more closely than two teachers agreed with each other. See the STAAR writing grader and the accuracy research.
Is this STAAR practice test generator free?
Yes. Generating practice tasks is free and requires no sign-in. Grading responses against the rubric in EnlightenAI takes a free account.
05 After the practice

Why teachers use AI grading after STAAR practice tests.

Generating the practice is the easy half. Grading thirty essays against the official rubric is where the weekend goes. EnlightenAI scores responses against the same rubric with per-criterion feedback, so practice becomes a feedback loop instead of a grading backlog.

0.77 QWK with teachers

In a study with DREAM Charter Schools, EnlightenAI plus a teacher scored 0.77 quadratic weighted kappa agreement, versus 0.52 for two teachers scoring independently.

70% exact score match

On the New York Regents dataset, EnlightenAI matched the training teacher’s exact score 70% of the time, and landed within one point the rest of the time.

From a real classroom

“Grading, once my most dreaded task, became faster and far more efficient. With EnlightenAI handling the bulk of the grading, I was free to focus on what mattered most: meaningful instruction with my students.” Melynda Brown, 6th Grade Humanities, Delta Schools
