NJSLA writing practice, built on the official rubrics.
Generate complete NJSLA prose constructed response practice: research simulation, literary analysis, and narrative writing tasks in the released PCR format, with sources, the official NJDOE rubric, and an exemplar with every task. When students finish, EnlightenAI grades every response against the same official rubric in minutes.

01 Build a task
Build an NJSLA practice task.
Pick a grade and task type, choose a topic, and generate the full package: task introduction and sources in the released PCR format, the prompt, the official NJDOE rubric, and an exemplar response.
Pick a curated topic or write your own. Research topics get three complementary sources; literary analysis gets paired texts; narrative gets a story to extend.
Task format mirrors the released Grade 4 Research Simulation Task, the closest released item of this type.
02 Why generated
Why use generated NJSLA practice tests?
Released questions are the official gold standard, and every task here is anchored to them. But states release only a handful, and students eventually know them. Generated practice tests keep the exact format and scoring while giving students fresh practice questions all year.

03 The writing tasks
Three task types, all evidence-based.
NJSLA ELA writing happens in prose constructed response tasks. The Research Simulation Task asks students to synthesize across paired informational sources. The Literary Analysis Task asks them to analyze one or two literary texts. The Narrative Writing Task asks them to continue or craft a story. RST and LAT are scored on Reading Comprehension and Written Expression (0–4 at grades 4 and up) plus Knowledge of Language and Conventions (0–3); the narrative task is scored on Written Expression plus Conventions.
NJSLA ELA includes prose constructed response (PCR) tasks: the Research Simulation Task (RST), the Literary Analysis Task (LAT), and the Narrative Writing Task (NWT). Students read one or more texts and write an extended response grounded in evidence from those texts.
How is NJSLA writing scored?
RST and LAT responses are scored on Reading Comprehension and Written Expression (0 to 4 at grades 4 and up, 0 to 3 at grade 3) plus Knowledge of Language and Conventions (0 to 3). The narrative task is scored on Written Expression plus Conventions. The full NJDOE rubrics, word for word, are in the EnlightenAI rubrics library.
When is the NJSLA administered?
NJSLA is administered in a spring window set annually by NJDOE. NJDOE has also announced a move toward a computer-adaptive format, so confirm the current year details against the official NJDOE assessment calendar.
Where can I find NJSLA released items?
NJDOE publishes released item sets, rubrics, and scored sample student responses through the New Jersey assessment resource portal (nj.mypearsonsupport.com; currently offline, with documents preserved in the Internet Archive) and NJDOE at nj.gov/education.
How many sources does the NJSLA Research Simulation Task use?
The released NJSLA practice tests present three sources for the Research Simulation Task; students synthesize evidence across them in one essay. The Literary Analysis Task pairs two literary texts, and the Narrative Writing Task builds from one story.
Is reading comprehension scored on the NJSLA narrative task?
No. Per the official NJDOE rubric notes, the narrative task is scored on Written Expression plus Knowledge of Language and Conventions; reading is not scored on narrative responses.
Is there an NJSLA writing practice generator?
Yes, on this page. It builds research simulation, literary analysis, and narrative writing tasks in the released NJSLA PCR format, with sources, the official NJDOE rubric word for word, and an exemplar. NJDOE publishes no scored student responses, so exemplars are written to the official rubric and labeled accordingly.
Can AI grade NJSLA writing?
Yes. EnlightenAI trains on the official NJDOE rubric and scores each PCR response with per-criterion feedback. In accuracy studies, EnlightenAI plus a teacher agreed with expert scores more closely than two teachers agreed with each other. See the AI essay grader and the accuracy research.
Is this NJSLA practice test generator free?
Yes. Generating practice tasks is free and requires no sign-in. Grading responses against the rubric in EnlightenAI takes a free account.
05 After the practice
Why teachers use AI grading after NJSLA practice tests.
Generating the practice is the easy half. Grading thirty essays against the official rubric is where the weekend goes. EnlightenAI scores responses against the same rubric with per-criterion feedback, so practice becomes a feedback loop instead of a grading backlog.
0.77 QWK with teachers
In a study with DREAM Charter Schools, EnlightenAI plus a teacher scored 0.77 quadratic weighted kappa agreement, versus 0.52 for two teachers scoring independently.
70% exact score match
On the New York Regents dataset, EnlightenAI matched the training teacher’s exact score 70% of the time, and landed within one point the rest of the time.
From a real classroom
“Grading, once my most dreaded task, became faster and far more efficient. With EnlightenAI handling the bulk of the grading, I was free to focus on what mattered most: meaningful instruction with my students.” Melynda Brown, 6th Grade Humanities, Delta Schools
Train EnlightenAI on the official NJDOE rubric, then grade every practice response with per-criterion feedback. What used to take a weekend now takes a single class period.
