02 Why generated
Why use generated Ohio State Test practice tests?
Released questions are the official gold standard, and every task here is anchored to them. But states release only a handful, and students eventually know them. Generated practice tests keep the exact format and scoring while giving students fresh practice questions all year.

03 Scoring
Scored with the official Ohio writing rubrics.
Purpose, Focus, and Organization (0–4) plus Evidence and Elaboration (0–4) plus Conventions of Standard English (0–2), for 10 points. Ohio publishes four rubrics: informative/explanatory and opinion at grades 3 to 5, informative/explanatory and argumentation at grades 6 to high school. Every descriptor in this generator is Ohio’s own wording.
What writing is on Ohio’s State Test (OST) for ELA?
Each OST ELA test includes one extended writing item worth 10 points. Students read two passages and write a multi-paragraph response. The mode is informative/explanatory or opinion at grades 3 to 5, and informative/explanatory or argumentation at grades 6 through high school.
How is the Ohio State Test writing item scored?
On Ohio’s official holistic writing rubric: Purpose, Focus, and Organization (0 to 4), Evidence and Elaboration (0 to 4), and Conventions of Standard English (0 to 2), for 10 points total. Conventions is a 2-point scale whose descriptors begin at score point 2. This generator embeds all three dimensions word for word.
Does the Ohio argumentation prompt require a counterclaim?
At grades 7 and up, yes: the released directions say "address counterclaims" and the rubric expects a clearly addressed alternate or opposing claim. At grade 6 it does not. Ohio footnotes that rubric line "Not applicable at grade 6," and this generator drops the counterclaim bullet at grade 6 to match.
Where can I find released Ohio State Test items?
The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce publishes Item Release and Scoring Guide documents for each grade on the Ohio State Tests portal. They contain the released items, the scoring guidelines, and real student responses scored from 10 down to 0 with the scorers’ own commentary.
How long should an Ohio 10-point response be?
Shorter than most teachers expect. Ohio’s officially scored 10-point sample at grade 3 runs about 200 words, and the grade 6 and 7 samples run about 500. Every one of them also contains real spelling and usage errors, because Conventions is only 2 of the 10 points. Exemplars here are calibrated to those actual samples rather than to a polished model essay.
What do the Ohio passages look like?
Two passages, each titled "Passage 1" or "Passage 2" with an author line, and paragraphs numbered continuously across both passages so the numbering does not restart. Grades 3 to 5 get a boxed glossary for bold vocabulary; grades 6 to 8 get numbered footnotes. Generated tasks reproduce that structure so students can cite "passage 2, paragraph 9" the way the released student responses do.
How does this generator stay faithful to the real test?
The task directions and both bullet lists are transcribed verbatim from Ohio’s Spring 2021 Item Release documents, the rubric is Ohio’s official language word for word, and exemplars are calibrated against Ohio’s own officially scored 10-point student responses. The passages and topics are generated; the scaffolding and scoring are not.

05 After the practice
Why teachers use AI grading after Ohio State Test practice tests.
Generating the practice is the easy half. Grading thirty essays against the official rubric is where the weekend goes. EnlightenAI scores responses against the same rubric with per-criterion feedback, so practice becomes a feedback loop instead of a grading backlog.
0.77 QWK with teachers
In a study with DREAM Charter Schools, EnlightenAI plus a teacher scored 0.77 quadratic weighted kappa agreement, versus 0.52 for two teachers scoring independently.
70% exact score match
On the New York Regents dataset, EnlightenAI matched the training teacher’s exact score 70% of the time, and landed within one point the rest of the time.
